SFGate: Daily Dish

Britney Spears' family have accused Dr. Phil McGraw of violating their trust by making public statements about his hospital visit to the troubled singer.

McGraw went to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday, where Spears was being held following a stand-off with police when she refused to hand over her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline after a scheduled visit at her Beverly Hills mansion.

Following the visit, McGraw said he planned to devote the Tuesday episode of his show "Dr. Phil" to Spears' ongoing problems.

But Spears family spokesman Lou Taylor said that at no time had the family planned to do a show with McGraw, describing the therapist as "self-serving."

McGraw said on Monday that plans for the show had been axed.

Some tax changes on tap for 2008

The rest of the long-term gains, $14,900, would be taxed at 15 percent.

Retirees living solely on investment income could reap huge rewards, too, says John W. Roth, a senior tax analyst with CCH, an Illinois provider of tax information.

Take a couple whose $80,000 income comes from qualified dividends and the sale of long-held stocks, he says. After the standard deduction and personal exemptions, the couple's taxable income could be below $65,100, he says. In other words, they pay no tax.

• Kiddie tax changes. Congress raised the age of children subject to the so-called kiddie tax. This throws a wrench into plans of wealthy parents wanting to take advantage of tax-free capital gains by shifting securities to youngsters to sell.

For many years, the kiddie tax disappeared once a child turned 14.

Holy Family, O'Learys honor church's 150th year

But they came to Holy Family Catholic Church on Thursday, smiling awkwardly at attention avoided for generations, out of devotion to the parish of their ancestors.

On Sunday, Holy Family will celebrate its 150th anniversary, having survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and other assorted calamities. Church leaders have spent the year renewing connections to the past it shares with Chicago.

Together we've mandated ignition interlocks for every offender and closed loopholes to hold out-of-state offenders to the same standard.

We've run statewide super-blitzes, created a hotline to report drunk driving, cracked down on bars over serving their customers, and tightened our drunk driving laws.

And what's the result?

Over the last five years our alcohol related fatalities have decreased by almost 20 percent, and early statistics for 2007 indicate DWI fatalities are the lowest in state history.

But we must do more. There must be penalties for those who tamper with their ignition interlock and penalties for new residents with out-of-state offenses who avoid our law.

To make our streets safer, we must also remember that the majority of DWI offenders are abusing more than just alcohol, and we should continue our commitment to rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment.

The Arts Column: Tears for the stars who lit up our lives

I heard it on some late-night radio show, found you couldn't buy it in Britain but managed to order it from America and then played it until the grooves wore out.

It was an odd choice that stood out like a sore thumb in my early record collection alongside the fierce-edged punk and post-punk singers I favoured.

I didn't like country or folk; I wasn't at all interested in the Americana movement of wistful, nostalgic singing of which Stewart was an early pioneer. But I did love westerns, and there was something about the songs - and that insouciantly waved cowboy hat - that made me feel this was a modern but authentic slice of the West.

Even now, when I haven't thought about the album for 20-odd years (it got stolen after I had long ceased playing it), I find I can still remember the words of almost every track.

Intimidating groups of teenagers adorn the landscape

If they are alone or in couples, they undergo complete personality changes and act like anyone's child or grandchild. Many are the times I have renewed my respect for middle school teachers by studying the challenges of their young clients at the mall. Some of these kids are continually engaged in cell phone conversations...sometimes with each other as they saunter through the area in the same pack.

There are probably few malls in the nation as predominantly Caucasian as the Cape Cod Mall. In other places you will see significant percentages of blacks and Asians. Not so here on the Cape. Ethnic faces do appear, particularly Hispanic ones, but the number of minorities are nowhere near as plentiful as what I have observed at malls in Connecticut or New York.

Joanna Weiss's picks

After months of discussion, speculation, and a spotlight on the mysterious Bancroft family, Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate purchased the parent company of the Wall Street Journal in a $5.3 billion deal. An exodus of longtime writers ensued, followed by the announcement of layoffs and the impending death of the Marketplace section.

Imus loses (and regains) his show

In April, eight days after he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos," CBS Radio yanked Don Imus's morning radio show, which drew 1.6 million listeners and a who's who of political and media guests. This month, Imus was back with a five-year deal with Citadel Broadcasting, two new black cast members, and a pledge not to sound racist again.

Fox Business Network launches

Just in time to capitalize on the purchase of the Wall Street Journal, Murdoch's News Corp.
