As housing slumps, realtors quit

Yanking up her custom-made "For Sale" signs in her North Lake neighborhood rattled her ego, she admits. But when Ms. McMahon closed her final sale, a house in Snellville, Ga., in late November, the mother of two felt a swell of relief.

"Now I can finally get my own house back together," she says. "I'm nervous about the future, but I feel happy."

McMahon is one of thousands of real estate agents across the US wandering with mixed emotions and uncertain prospects through the debris of a real estate gold rush.

As many train for new careers, return to old ones, or wait tables until prices rebound, the plight of the real estate agent – average age, 51 – reveals the human dimension of how loose lending, raw opportunity, and self-determination produced a housing bust that has stunned the US economy.

While heavy industrial companies in the cement, steel, aluminium, power generation and car industries are making climate change moves, many will likely lobby against carbon auctioning for some time. 2008 may be the year when large companies have to be a little more honest about the limitations of energy reductions beyond a certain point.

Companies outside these sectors making the running in the fast moving consumer goods and retail areas such as Cadbury and Marks & Spencer will have to begin thinking about whether they can ever sell nuclear as ethical to customers and non-governmental organisation partners as plans get further under way to introduce more nuclear.

Those companies pledging research budgets and large cash donations to tackle climate change, such as Exxon and HSBC, will need to start talking about what these might deliver too, in real terms.

The Price Is Right, but Maybe It's Not, and How Do You Know?

For example, New York drugstore chain Duane Reade increased baby product revenues by 27% after using pricing software to examine sales data, according to an article titled, "The Price Is Right...Isn't It?" that appeared in the January 2007 edition of Accenture's business publication Outlook. In the article, Cudahy and George L. Coleman, a leader of Accenture's retail pricing group, describe how the data showed that parents of newborns are not as price-sensitive as parents of toddlers. In response, the company cut prices on toddler diapers to remain competitive with other stores and raised prices on diapers for infants.

Cudahy says better pricing can help businesses on many other levels beyond revenue boosts. For example, he worked with a parcel delivery company that introduced a coherent pricing strategy to its operations and found it was able to reduce by 90% the time spent working out pricing for bids.

Fowler walks away from MFS CFO role

On Friday Allco non-executive director Barbara Ward said she had resigned from the financial services group, without citing a reason.

As pressure mounts on companies such as MFS, Centro Properties Group and Allco Finance Group, more and more senior executives and directors are expected to jump ship.

U.S. National Criterium Championships - NE

Toyota-United will of course have it's speedy duo of Juan Jose Haedo and Ivan Dominguez in town, with Haedo winning again last weekend at the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix. Haedo looked to be set to dominate all season after his strong Tour of California performance, and has made his mark as the top sprinter in North America.

But Health Net-Maxxis has been coming on to form since the return of Kiwi Greg Henderson from injury, winning the Reading Classic and Philadelphia International back-to-back. Health Net's Aussie strongman Karl Menzies has also raced strong this season and veteran sprinter Gord Fraser is racing his last criterium nationals and may be looking to end like Carney and Monahan did.

However the big surprise, particularly in the crit-heavy month of August, is the Navigators Insurance team.

August 2006

This time the news conference overlooks opponent Christy Mihos' home on Great Island across Lewis Bay from Sea Street. It is probably the closest the two of them have been to each other since he turned down her offer to be her running mate and declared his own candidacy for the office.

After last evening's symposium at the Cape Cod Community College the audience offered several suggested reasons for the news conference.

Since MS Healey has already said she is opposed to it, like her boss the Governor, many felt she would "stick it to Christy" by endorsing the wind farm literally in his face.

One GOP stalwart believes that her running mate, Reed Hillman, has been reading her the polls statewide which show strong support for the project.

Others were equally sure she would simply restate her opposition. Another GOP operative reminded this reporter that since her war chest is overflowing, she can now afford to take a stand which might lure more votes in November since she has no primary opposition and Mihos will get all the anti-wing farm votes in Barnstable County anyway.
