| Tax breaks can help with college costs
Here are education tax benefits for 2007. You can claim them for qualifying education expenses for yourself, your spouse or a dependent for whom you claim an exemption on your tax return. You can't take any of them if your filing status is married filing separately. Tax credits: There are two. Calculate them using Form 1098-T, which a college must send every enrolled student by the end of January. To claim a credit, attach Form 8863 to your 1040 or 1040A form. The Hope credit, worth up to $1,650 per student in 2007, can be taken only in the first two years of post-secondary education, providing the student is enrolled at least half time. For each student you can claim 100 percent of the first $1,100 in qualified education expenses and 50 percent of the next $1,100.
Ramesh saves Panday
He said Panday was thinking of exercising his right to give evidence and to call witnesses. But Maharaj said he was handicapped as he had not seen the transcripts of the evidence. Maharaj said he would need an adjournment to peruse the transcripts before giving proper advice to his clients. He pointed out that the prosecution was led from the very start by a Queens Counsel (Sir Timothy Cassel QC), while the Pandays did not have that facility. Maharaj said the Pandays could not have afforded senior counsel before because of other matters he had pending in court. He asked for an adjournment of six weeks to peruse the transcripts and advise his clients. He found that his request was not unreasonable and expressed his regret from interrupting the courts schedule which was to complete the case yesterday.
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, On Foot
The 60-year-old professor from Brattleboro, Vt. argues that, with a year left in Mr. Bush's term, there is still time to investigate his conduct of the Iraq war, as well as other issues which have brought criticism against his administration - the outing of a CIA agent, the surveillance of Americans without warrants, and the abuse of detainees. He said he shudders with anger and fear in response to actions and statements, such as a willingness to redefine what is torture and when it can be used, made by Mr. Bush and Cheney: "Anger because we have stooped so low, fear because all of what we have cherished as a nation - indeed, all of the great things about the United States that we have shown the world - are being destroyed by the current administration." With the White House refusing to turn over documents or testimony in response to Congressional subpoenas, the only weapon in the arsenal of lawmakers seeking accountability, critics say, is impeachment.

A raging fire
On the fateful night of Dec 27, 2007, I managed to reach home with great difficulty at 11pm, had dinner and went to sleep around 1am. I was rudely woken up at 2am by the violent ringing of the door bell. On opening the door I was shocked to see the chowkidar, who agitatedly said that the building was on fire and we should all vacate it quickly. Panic spread in the family as I gathered my mother, wife and children and managed to reach the safety of the road with great difficulty through the thick, black smoke which had started to engulf the stairs. I asked the chowkidar how the fire erupted and he replied that four to five youngsters came to the branch of a bank located on the ground floor and threw some inflammable material through its glass doors. This exploded and the bank caught fire, which then rapidly spread to the flats above.
at BUFFALO 10/8
The stakes were much lower Sunday, but this play did come at a crucial time. The score was tied and the Rams were fired up by an 85-yard punt return by Dante Hall . If Romo was stopped, Dallas would have to punt to Hall again. Romo got control around the 17, turned left and headed back up the field. He juked Raonall Smith around the 30, then kept going until stepping out of bounds at the St. Louis 46. ''That play will go down as one of the greatest plays in the history of the NFL,'' Ellis said. The play was so mentally and physically draining, a time out was called. By St. Louis. ''I was like, 'Thank you! I appreciate it!''' Romo said. Five snaps later, Romo ran for a touchdown that put the Cowboys up 14-7. Dallas broke it open with three third-quarter touchdowns in only 11 plays.
