| Expelled MP May Face Met Inquiry
An MP expelled from the Tory party in the Commons over payments to his son from parliamentary allowances is awaiting news of a possible police inquiry and fresh sleaze investigation. Derek Conway, who was stripped of the Conservative whip by party leader David Cameron on Monday, has been reported to Scotland Yard by a political rival. Duncan Borrowman, the Liberal Democrat challenger for the MP's Old Bexley and Sidcup seat, has written to the Metropolitan Police asking them to examine whether a fraud has been committed. His letter had not been received by detectives late Monday night. Mr Cameron's action followed a highly critical report which condemned Mr Conway's use of parliamentary allowances to pay his son Freddie more than £40,000.
KickSkirt finds its niche in targeting messages to women
Klaudia Flanigin, a strategic brand director who spent five years at GSD&M Idea City working as a leader on the Wal-Mart account; and Sharon Miller, a brand strategist who has worked for Converse, Gap Inc. and Whole Foods Market Inc. "These are women who have had experience in running multimillion-dollar accounts," Dean says. Dean's own credentials include spending five years as vice president and creative director of Publicis USA, where she led business for Curves, a franchise of women-only fitness centers. A number of traditional agencies have women-focused marketing research or advertising divisions, but Dean believes that her all-female team gives her an edge over traditional agencies .
Three weeks until it begins anew
With that in mind, three teams can enter spring training realistically counting themselves as contenders for the NL East title. (And some members of the Nationals and Marlins might also try to convince themselves their squads have a shot.) The Braves, like the Mets and Phillies, can make a legitimate claim that if things go well — not if things go perfectly, but just if they go well — they can reclaim the NL East title that New York took from them in 2006 and which is presently held by Philly after the Mets' Great September Collapse of '07. But anyway, we'll have plenty of time to analyze every aspect of spring training and the upcoming race. For now, suffice to say the Braves, from the front office down to every player I've spoken with or corresponded with electronically, believe that GM Frank Wren has addressed every need the team had last season.

Monoliners may make financial crisis a whole lot worse
Who said high finance was boring? Last week, as markets gyrated and the US central bank unexpectedly cut interest rates, the new obsession for the markets, the media and ordinary people alike was whether we are heading for recession. Well, are we or aren't we, and if so, what can be done about it? Too much attention is paid to the R-word. In this country, by common agreement among economists (a rare thing) a recession means two consecutive quarters of falling output (i.e. negative economic growth). Quite why it is two quarters and not three, or indeed one, I am not sure. On this definition, the UK had a recession in 1990-92 and 1979-81. But since the war, in most developed countries, recessions have been rare. Yet this definition may not be very helpful. An economy might experience exactly two consecutive quarters of slightly falling output and then recover sharply, such that once you look back you wonder what all the fuss was about.
Mayor wants to strip suburbs' say in merger
Herenton, who began an unprecedented fifth term in office Tuesday, said in his speech to the Kiwanis Club at The Peabody that he's putting consolidation back on the "front burner." "Yes, I'm singing out of this choir book again," he said, calling the current city-county governmental structure "wasteful." Under the traditional Tennessee approach to consolidating governments, Herenton would have to follow the legal process set out by both the Tennessee Constitution and state statute -- a countywide referendum that requires separate majority votes of residents inside the city of Memphis and those outside the city limits in Shelby County, including residents of the suburban municipalities. If consolidation wins inside the city but is rejected among Shelby voters outside the city, or vice versa, it fails to win approval.
India wants Symonds, Proctor punished
I heard a caller to a talkback radio show here in Perth say that when living in India, he found that racism is rampant everyday occurance. The word MONKEY is a word they commonly use for black people. Stand up for our players. We should have let the indians go home and never to return. They are the racists here but I find they are the ones calling the shots and we are acting like puppets. A Rest for our players to spend time with their families may have kept Gilly for a while longer and maybe taity would not have made his announcement.
