Blizzard nightmare Rescue almost didn't happen for 4 stranded on ...

Every flight was canceled and the airport was closed. The weather report was bad.

I bumped into a friend, Sheryl Swartz from Decatur, who was headed for Florida. I said, "Sheryl, if it is getting bad, why don't we rent a car and go home and sit out the storm." All cars had been rented but one, a four-door sedan from National. We took it.

As we headed to the rental car, we bumped into Jim Stovall and his wife. When they found out we were headed for the Fort Wayne airport, where all our cars were parked, they said they wanted to go along.

After we were on I-465 North about five minutes, we realized we were doing the wrong thing. The snow was deep and getting deeper. The temperature (the radio said) was 46 below zero with the chill factor, and the wind was so strong, we had to fight the car from blowing sideways.

Scottish writer wins top Costa book award

Scottish writer and standup comedian A.L. Kennedy has won Britain's Costa Book of the Year Award for Day, a novel about a war veteran who works as an extra on a war film.

Joanna Trollope, a British writer who chaired the jury that chose the book, called it "perfectly, beautifully written."

"(It's) very witty, very lyrical, it's quite dark," Trollope said. "Her style is arresting. There's a shadow of James Joyce in it."

Kennedy has created a character who remembers the Second World War as the best period of his life and tries to reclaim the person he was during the fighting by taking a job in a war film.

"An exceptional feat of research and an astonishing effort of the imagination, A.L. Kennedy's Day is both terrifying and hilarious," the jury said in its citation.

I don't know if it's done in other parts of the country, which I'm sure it is, but around here, there are local theaters that put the Packer game on the big screen. It's mostly theaters that serve beer and food that do it, otherwise, without serving beer at a Packer game in Wisconsin, it's pointless. It's an incredibly popular place for people to go and watch the game. I've never done it myself, but there are a lot of people that do. Not any more. The NFL has sent out letters to the owners of these operations to stop showing these games because they violate copyright laws. This according to the Journal Sentinel. Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman, said in an e-mail that the league recently became aware that the businesses were showing Packers games. "We let them know they are violating copyright law and longstanding NFL policies that prohibit mass out-of-town viewing of NFL games," he said.

Tinopolis finds the golden touch

Tinopolis said a strong order book for the year ahead has given confidence that it can cope with pressures in the stock market.

After two years of major acquisitions, the company has secured contracts and commissions with the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BSkyB and other big broadcasters.

The company is now one of the most diverse production ventures, delivering a range of programming, including sport, current affairs, drama and factual.

It also has a strong presence in Wales, with its Fiction Factory operation producing Welsh drama – including Caerdydd on S4C.

Executive chairman Ron Jones said, "During a period of turmoil in the stock market and major falls in prices, particularly in media stocks, we are pleased to report that the business remains in good shape and is progressing in line with the plans and targets we have been outlining over the last two years.

Best and Worst Places to Buy a House

The housing crunch and the excessive inventory--exceeding 10 months on resale homes--continues to take its toll on housing prices. But over the long term, housing is still a good investment. In fact, it's more than an investment; it's a home. Plus, you're not really saving anything by renting, as the costs of renting and owning are about equal (well, owning may be a little more). The tax benefits of home ownership far outweigh renting, too. With good housing prices in many great areas, this may indeed be the time to buy.

So now that I've convinced you this is a good time to buy a home, the next question is, Where do you buy one? No matter where you look, you should check out some basic economic fundamentals before buying. Is job growth stable in the area? Is income keeping up with inflation? Is crime above the national average? Is there a higher-than-average rate of foreclosures? These issues and others play a factor when deciding where to buy a house.
