| Giants owe the Patriots
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The New England Patriots' coronation as the first NFL team to go 19-0 was interrupted Monday afternoon by the arrival of the New York Giants for Super Bowl XLII. Dressed in black suits like something out of a ''Sopranos'' casting call and led by coach Tom Coughlin, the Giants let it be known there's still a game to be played Sunday. .
Commission and school board agree on needs
What, when, where, why and how much? These were pretty much the discussion topics at Monday evenings lengthy work session between the Bradley County Commission and Bradley County Board of Education. Needs There was something new. A sense of cooperation and gathering of information were evident. The joint work session came following a called meeting of the school board earlier in the afternoon. The school board has requested the Commission fund two new elementary schools, one on the north side and a second on the south. The board is also requesting renovation and additions at Valley View Elementary School with six new classrooms and a new library. The Commission's Education Committee has reviewed the school construction requests and made a couple of motions — both discussed at Monday's school board meeting.
Hominy & Hash
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Surprisingly, there were many calls, e-mails and letters from readers who enjoyed my article on the kidnapping of the Lindbergh Baby and events surrounding the 1932 event. Every once in awhile, there are stories that capture our attention and stay with us until decades later we still want to know more. Another such story is the disappearance of Judge Joseph Crater. Now, admittedly, I have no first-hand information on this story. What I do have is a sharp recollection of how his vanishing act became colloquial humor almost from the day he stepped into a taxicab on August 6, 1930, never to be heard from again, until ... well, now - at least to people old enough to still remember what "pulling a Judge Crater" would mean. Sightings became popular in the middle of the last century.
More foster kids caught in limbo
One thing most experts agree on is there are not enough counseling and treatment programs, good foster homes and families willing to adopt children from foster care. Without them, troubled children grow into troubled adults, said Family Court Chief Judge Chandlee Johnson Kuhn. .
Chiefs fan in Bronco country
Thanks again NFL. Well, my time has come to sign off for the year. I have exhausted my thoughts throughout the year. Many thanks to all the Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, and Raiders fans who supported me. Thanks for all the comments and good conversations this year. I have made some good friends and started some good relationships this year. I will probably be shutting my mouth until some free agent acquisitions and draft time. It has been a pleasure to write again and I look forward to next season. Until then................GO CHIEFS!!!!! Batman out. .
Housing Slump Starts to Hit Stronger Cities
It's getting harder to hide from the housing bust. Tight credit, fragile consumer confidence and a weakening economy are slowing sales and depressing prices even in some places -- such as the Pacific Northwest and North Carolina -- that until recently had avoided the housing slump afflicting most of the country. .
