Venezuela gunmen captured after standoff

The pursuit ended less than two hours after the gunmen fled the bank under a deal negotiated with police.

"This nightmare is over," Manuitt told state television.

The arrests ended an ordeal that began Monday morning with a botched bank robbery in this town southeast of Caracas. The hostage standoff at the Banco Provincial branch was the longest in at least a decade in Venezuela, and every twist and turn became a spectacle in TV and radio news across the country and in neighboring Colombia.

In the final hours, some hostages inside the bank held up signs in the windows with desperate pleas for help and used cell phones to call their relatives.

Under the deal with police, the gunmen were permitted to leave with five hostages who agreed to accompany them, freeing the rest of the captives at the bank.

The Richardson File: The Santa Fe New Mexican follows the governor's ...

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Michigan environmental activists Thursday accused New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democratic presidential hopeful, of suggesting that northern states — including the Great Lakes region — share water with the Sun Belt.

"Richardson’s assault is the latest in a lengthy list of schemes to siphon Great Lakes water to other areas of the nation and the world," said a statement by five groups, including the Michigan Environmental Council and the state chapter of the Sierra Club.

A spokesman for Richardson said if the governor is elected president, he would "embrace a national water policy that will specifically help protect the authority of states and the rights of local communities throughout the country."

Goody's will close store March 31

Goody's Family Clothing will close its store in Sunset Plaza on March 31. Kristin Alm, public relations manager for Goody's, said routine evaluations showed the Enid store wasn't "performing as well" as other stores in the retail chain. The decision to close the store was made earlier in January. Alm said company officials have no plans to re-evaluate the situation and reopen a Goody's in Enid. Employees will be given the opportunity to transfer to another location. Goody's has 13 other stores in Oklahoma, in Ada, Altus, Ardmore, Bartlesville, Chickasha, Duncan, Durant, Lawton, McAlester, Mus-kogee, Ponca City, Stillwater and Tahlequah. According to Alm, no other Oklahoma locations are closing. Goody's store management in Enid declined to comment. The business moved to its current location in Sunset Plaza in November 2002.

Mother accused in baby's drowning faced financial strain

GRANITE BAY, Calif. (AP) - A first-time mother arrested after the apparent drowning death of her 8-day-old baby may have been under financial strain, according to public records.

Kristina Fuelling, 27, was being held in the Placer County Jail on Tuesday after her arrest in the death of her baby, Faith Evelyn. The infant's body was found in a bathroom sink Sunday in the family's rental home in Granite Bay, an affluent suburb east of Sacramento.

Court records show she and her husband, Nicholas Fuelling, had two home foreclosures in 2006. The state also issued a tax lien against Nicholas Fuelling for nearly $54,000, and the Better Business Bureau received numerous complaints about his mold-detection company.

Kristina Fuelling is scheduled to make her first court appearance Wednesday.

So was the scene at LAX on Saturday and Pure Nightclub on Sunday, as Britney's pal and Britney's ex drank and danced together this weekend. Paris and Kevin are both in Sin City to host separate New Year's Eve parties, but found their way to each other's side. According to People.com, the unlikely pair went back to Paris's room Saturday night after leaving the club, but seemed more distant on Sunday night.

Could they have been feeling a little regret from the night before? Hmmmmm....
