Hypercom moving 200 jobs to Scottsdale

Hypercom Corp., a Phoenix-based producer of terminals that process credit-card sales at stores, has announced plans to move its headquarters to north Scottsdale, bringing more than 200 jobs to the East Valley. Spokesman Pete Schuddekopf said the company will move to 8888 E. Raintree Drive, near Loop 101, during the first half of next year. The firm will lease 45,000 square feet that is being designed to its specifications in a building at the Raintree Corporate Center, he said. We were looking to upgrade our facility, and we found this one and got a great deal on it, he said. And there is a great talent pool in Scottsdale. The companys headquarters is at 2815 W. Kathleen Road, near Interstate 17 and Greenway Parkway, in Phoenix. The move is the latest action to cut costs that began in June and resulted in layoffs in the sales and marketing staff.

Holocaust Museum founder Lerman dies

Miles Lerman, who fought against the Nazis in Poland and later helped found the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., has died. He was 88.

Lerman's wife, Rosalie, confirmed Wednesday that he died Tuesday at his home in Philadelphia.

Lerman was a member of a prosperous family whose flour mills were seized by the Nazis. Lerman escaped from a slave labor camp and fought the Nazis with other partisans for nearly two years in the forests of Poland.

"Our job was to raise havoc, to raise hell with them and survive," he once told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lerman and his wife immigrated to New York City in 1947. He worked as a grocery warehouse clerk in Brooklyn, N.Y., then had a chicken farm in Vineland, N.J. He later started a home heating oil business that grew into a major distributorship, and invested in real estate.

Placer to sue former planner

Placer County supervisors voted Tuesday to sue former county Planning Commissioner Michelle Ollar-Burris and a group of her clients, alleging violations of state planning law.

County Counsel Tony LaBouff said the lawsuit, which may be filed as soon as today, will include allegations that Ollar-Burris committed fraud, violated her fiduciary obligations as a planning commissioner and engaged in unfair business practices.

Ollar-Burris, an Auburn real estate broker, was removed from the Placer County Planning Commission in June after a Sacramento Bee story detailed real estate transactions that appeared designed to subvert California's Subdivision Map Act.

Community group splits over condo proposal

Bill Lagna doesn't feel he's leading a coup.

As the first president of a community group created in the wake of a divisive plan to build condominiums at a weathered marina in Bowleys Quarters, Lagna says the goal is to unify residents on the eastern Baltimore County peninsula.

"The intent of the group is to try to come up with acceptable developments that will fit in with the general theme of the existing neighborhood," says Lagna, president of the new Bowleys Quarters Community Association. "We would like community input and to listen to the entire community - for and against any issue."
