Louisiana appears to be rebounding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, gaining 50,000 residents. After the storm hit in August 2005, the bureau estimated that the state lost 250,000 residents. California remains the nation's most populous state with about 37 million people. It attracted about 300,000 new residents, second to Texas numerically, but 25th fastest by rate of growth. The total U.S. population was estimated at 301.6 million. .
Ford loss narrows in 4Q, offers buyouts
In a conference call with analysts and media, Mulally said the United Auto Workers union agreed to two rounds of buyouts at its U.S. plants, with workers expected to leave the company by either March 1 or April 1. He said the bulk of the separations were expected to occur in the second quarter. The buyouts come in addition to a round of buyouts in 2006, when 33,600 U.S. hourly workers left the company. Ford lost $2.8 billion, or $1.30 per share in the fourth quarter, narrower than a loss of $5.6 billion, or $2.98 per share, in 2006. The full-year loss of $2.7 billion, or $1.35 per share, was significantly better than 2006, when Ford lost $12.6 billion, or $6.72 per share. Mulally said Ford remains on track to make a profit in 2009, but is expecting another loss in 2008. "Overall, our plan is working and we continue to show progress," Mulally said.

A note to liberals about economics
If we don't like cutting countries in half, we could look for countries that changed from one economy to another. Zimbabwe comes to mind. Its economy declined from one of the strongest in Africa to one of the world's weakest after nationalization of industry and redistribution of private land.Then there is Ireland. Ireland's heavy industries, due to poor planning and international problems, almost disappeared by the early 1980s.Agriculture was constrained by production quotas. There was mass unemployment and the national debt had doubled, mostly due to welfare programs and subsidies.This changed in the mid 1990s when Ireland began to institute free market economics and lower taxes. Ireland is now ranked, by some measures, as the second wealthiest per capita country in the world.Then there is China.

Femme-focused talk show on Osmond's dance card
As for celebrity guests, Osmond noted that she has a lot of friends in the industry but is interested in focusing on "real women." It's yet to be determined where the show would shoot, though it likely will be in Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Marie and Donny Osmond are set to perform together for a week in July in Las Vegas at MGM Grand's Hollywood Theatre, which has led to speculation that they might set up a permanent show in the city. As for her brother, Osmond said she enjoys working with him, but "Marie" is going to be very female-centric.
