PLEASANTON, Calif., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Polycom, Inc. , the market leader in unified collaborative communications solutions, today challenged local companies in Pleasanton, Dublin and Livermore to out-donate Polycom in Alameda County's first Tri-Valley Community Food Bank Holiday Food and Fund Drive. Last year, Polycom made the largest donation, delivering over 11 tons of food following an internal challenge issued by department leaders to their teams. Losing department heads were forced to sing "Who Let the Dogs Out," chosen by the winning executive, at the Polycom holiday party -- to decidedly mixed reviews! .

Contaminated with E. coli, the California-grown spinach poisoned at least 205 people and led to three deaths in 26 states. Florida's huge tomato industry hasn't been rocked with a comparable outbreak. But this year, tomato growers joined the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in pushing for state oversight that would send state inspectors for the first time to farms and packing plants. The Legislature approved a bill giving inspection power to the department, now in the midst of writing regulations that would take effect next summer. About 12 percent of food-borne illness stem from eating produce, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Though fresh produce is a vitamin-rich part of a healthy diet, it often is eaten raw, so there is no heat or pressure-packing step that kills harmful bacteria and viruses when they contaminate produce.

In 2008, for the first time ever, the amount of polysilicon shipped to the solar industry will exceed that used in the semiconductor business. The growing solar market has driven spot prices up to about $400 per kilogram, which is 10 times normal. Prices are continuing to tick up because the supply/demand equation is more out of whack now than it has been before. It is hard to get into the polysilicon business. It can take more than two years to bring on a plant, and there is a lot of proprietary knowledge required. There are different types of technology; MEMC uses a fluidized-bed approach, which has a big cost advantage over the competing Siemens process. Even with the massive increase in capacity planned by MEMC, which will ramp up to 8,000 tons of production this year from 4,400 tons, the market will be tighter.

Kyle Lohse is a pitcher acquired last July by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Cincinnati Reds.
