Ford to Challenge Chrysler Van

Ford intends to market the vans as a solution for small-business people, such as caterers. Larger vans in the U.S. are often used by plumbers, electricians and for transporting people from hotels and airports. It is unclear how Ford intends to price the van, though the 2008 Dodge Sprinter cargo van sells for about $34,000.

US judge grants states' request to extend antitrust oversight of ...

Court oversight of Microsoft Corp.'s market power, which began in 2002 after a landmark antitrust settlement, has been extended two years. A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a consent decree enforcing the settlement would remain in effect until November 2009. A group of 10 states led by California and New York had requested the oversight be extended until November 2012. The court's ruling "should not be viewed as a sanction against Microsoft," U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote. She said she based her decision on delays by Microsoft in filing technical documents related to the licensing of its software. Tuesday's decision may not have been what Microsoft hoped for, but it probably won't crimp the software maker's short-term plans, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst for the independent research group Directions on Microsoft.

A friend corroborated her story, according to the investigative record.

Mystery of Giants hard one to solve

Nobody expected us to be in the playoffs," linebacker Antonio Pierce said Monday. "That's fine. It's like I said after the Green Bay game: Don't become a believer yet. Wait another six days."

By halftime of Week 3, it had gotten worse. The Giants were losing 17-3 to the Redskins and appeared 30 minutes away from utter chaos.

Yet the Giants discovered something that afternoon. They learned, or maybe remembered, something about themselves. New York took a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter then stopped the Redskins on four consecutive plays at the goal line to win a game - and possibly save a season.

"That was a strong part of getting us going. We won six straight games following that," coach Tom Coughlin said. "The boost it provided our players was very evident.

Budget looks bleak for Collier public schools

Superintendent Dennis Thompson said the cuts he wants to make will allow the district to continue to operate in an educationally sound manner.

But everyone in the audience at the Collier County School Board's committee of the whole meeting agreed that the picture for the district is bleak.

Tuesday, members of the Collier County School District proposed more than $8 million in budget cuts, as well as cost projections to implement the district's three-year plan.

The district is making the cuts and proposals as state officials predict a general fund revenue shortfall of more than $2 billion. Earlier this year, facing a general fund revenue statewide, the district was forced to return $4.9 million in funds to the state. Of that, $2.5 million was for the Merit Award Program, which the district must return anyway because the district and the teachers could not reach an agreement on how the funds should be distributed.
