Agencies gear up to save people's homes

She immediately fell behind the climbing payments on her adjustable-rate mortgage, and, soon after, was in foreclosure.

Then a counselor at the Broward County Housing Authority helped Walton get a grant to pay up the past-due amount and arrange for her lender to change the loan to one she could afford.

Amid South Florida's alarming rise in foreclosures, the new mission of local agencies and nonprofits like the Broward housing agency has suddenly turned from providing affordable housing and down payment assistance to helping prevent homelessness among desperate borrowers facing foreclosure.

Groups are fanning out across the area to inform consumers about ways to avoid losing their homes. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's Miami branch hosted a meeting with lenders and counselors Thursday to launch a task force in Miami-Dade County to link homeowners with resources.

Commercial real estate in Colo. is 10.5% of economy, study says

The commercial real-estate sector had a $23.4 billion economic impact on the state in 2006, according to a study released Monday.

That represents 10.5 percent of Colorado's economy, according to the study commissioned by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, known as NAIOP.

"The number is impressive, but that's not why we did the study," said Marshall Burton, vice president of real-estate development for Opus. "It's looking at our industry, understanding who we are and taking that, and being a leader in job growth, responsible development and quality of life."

The three major metropolitan areas — Denver, the northern Front Range and Colorado Springs — contained 83.5 percent of the state's existing commercial and multifamily properties, with nearly 1.13 billion square feet of income-producing property.

Phila. Councilman Kelly Acknowledges FBI Probe of Staffer

A Philadelphia City Councilman says he's cooperating fully with a federal probe that reportedly involves a member of his staff. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that federal investigators are probing the dealings of Councilman Jack Kelly's chief of staff with two real estate developers. The US Attorney's office will neither confirm nor deny the report. Kelly himself was not available. His legislative aide, John Cerone, says Kelly and other staffers are cooperating: Q: "The Councilman has been interviewed by the FBI, correct?" Cerone: "It is my understanding that the Councilman has cooperated fully with all authorities, as has his staff." And Cerone stresses that Kelly has not been accused of any wrongdoing. Kelly, a Republican at-large Councilman, just narrowly survived his re-election bid, beating a challenger by only about 100 votes.

The Grove historic district for sale on eBay

The gift isn't guaranteed in time for Christmas because the bidding runs through Wednesday for the historic business district of the Coryell County town of—The Grove.

It's listed on eBay, with the headline: "Last chance to own an authentic Texas museum town."

Five buildings, including a blacksmith shop, are part of the half-acre package.

The eBay posting says a more than century-old hand-dug well "is still wet today."

Antiques collector Moody Anderson of Austin bought The Grove district in 1972.

The Grove is a community of about 100, located 80 miles north of Austin.
