Florida's midsection key to GOP hopefuls

LAKELAND, FLA. -- Linda Ivell is an ardent supporter of President Bush, leads the state Republican women's club and has met all of the major GOP presidential candidates. Yet the effervescent 53-year-old real estate agent, who lives in this former citrus and phosphate mining hub in central Florida, simply can't make up her mind about whom to vote for Tuesday in Florida's crucial presidential primary.

"I honestly don't know," said Ivell, who is torn by the candidates' appeals as conservatives on economic, national security and social issues.

How not to conduct an interview

The way you perceive yourself and your business may not necessarily appear that way in print or broadcast if you don't approach the interview as something that requires adequate preparation and the right attitude.

While I can't show you actual clips, I can offer examples of high-profile figures who have developed a media personality, and highlight how their approach to media is closely tied to their public image.

Go on the offensive: Even before the onset of his U.S. legal troubles and all the negative press it generated it was clear Conrad Black had little love for the media. Although he was — and continues to be — a genuinely interesting figure, even in his most successful years he left an impression of someone who is angry and impatient. It's likely this suited him just fine, but this image would be difficult for Black to recast without first changing his approach to the media.

Harris still in office after conviction

Harris' office staff confirmed he was in the office Thursday. He did not return phone calls.

A federal judge in Natchez sentenced Harris to serve six years in jail and three years probation. Judge David Bramlette allowed Harris to report for his sentence in January to spend time with his family, a blind father and an ailing mother.

Under the law, Harris could have been sentenced to a maximum of 70 years in prison and a fine of $1.75 million.

No fine was levied because Bramlette determined Harris was not in a position to pay a fine.

Harris will be allowed to serve his sentence in Yazoo City as to be close to his Jefferson County home.
