Whiteside could be big downtown draw

It was like flying first class.I realize these memories are not part of many of you now living in Corvallis, but I know there can be a real appreciation for its history if only it is correctly preserved.I want to see this theater be a movie theater again and not another strip mall. I want to see ownership by people who realize the theater's historic value to this community.Visit the Benton County Historical Society Museum in Philomath to see the beautiful exhibit telling of the Whiteside's history. Then you will understand the need to save this theater for generations to come.Kathy Herdt-BerbevinSalemWomen's basketball deserves supportI know the difference between men's and women's sports. I really do.Mine is the first generation to dip our big toe into Title Nine. Discrepancies between the sexes in competitive sports are many.

Post deal welcomed

UNION leaders representing Greater Manchester's postal workers have cautiously welcomed an agreement that could end the bitter dispute disrupting deliveries since the summer. Executives of the postal section of the Communication Workers' Union backed a settlement between union officials and Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier. Now it will be up to the union's 130,000 members to decide whether to accept the deal on pay, pensions and flexible working arrangements. Carl Webb, of CWU, said: "I'm pleased we have a negotiated settlement but it's got to go to the members now and it will be up to them to decide whether to accept it." Postal workers have staged several national walkouts after rejecting a pay offer of 2.5 per cent a year and warning that the Royal Mail's modernisation plans would lead to the loss of 40,000 jobs.

Radio & TV Talk

And more scripted shows run out of episodes. Thursday night, for instance, featured the final original episodes of "Ugly Betty" and "Chuck." There are still three "House" episodes. "Brothers and Sisters" has two. "CSI: NY" has one. Otherwise, most of the top 20 scripted shows are out of fresh episodes, including the two other CSIs, "Grey's," "Two & a Half Men," "Desperate," "Heroes," "NCIS," "Without a Trace," "Criminal Minds" and "SVU." TV Guide tracks the coundtown here..

"Price Is Right" ratings are down 9 percent with Drew Carey vs. Bob Barker. And poor Carey—his primetime game show "Power of 10" was yanked after two tries vs. "Idol" and horrible ratings results.

That fascinating History Channel two-hour doc "Life After People" about what the world would be like if we all just disappeared pulled in a network record 5.4 million viewers earlier this week.

If the Pats win, are they the best team ever? Maybe ...

Let's ask what seem to be the two big questions about the upcoming game. First, if New England wins, are these Patriots the best team ever? Second, if the Giants win, will that constitute the greatest upset ever?

If New England wins, the Patriots will not be the greatest team ever -- at least conditionally, until such time as the NFL reveals what was in the Patriots' cheating videos and documents that the league destroyed in September. Maybe once we know the full truth, then a 19-0 Patriots team could be considered the greatest, depending on what the full truth turns out to be.

Most of the sports media have rolled over and played dead on the New England destroyed-tapes story; TMQ reminds you of the specifics here. The NFL promised to get to the bottom of the Patriots' cheating and reveal the truth to the public; instead, the NFL destroyed the New England documents and refuses to say what they contained.

Stocks close day before Fed decision up

The 10-year Treasury note's yield, which moves opposite its price, was at 3.66 percent, up from 3.58 percent late Monday.

The dollar was mixed against most major currencies, and gold prices fell.

Oil prices moved higher as traders waited to see what the Fed's next move will be. A barrel of light sweet crude rose 65 cents to $91.64 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Wall Street has been extremely volatile in recent weeks amid fears of a U.S. recession and further write-downs in the financial sector. However, that has given way to a more quiet tone this week as investors looked for their second-straight day of gains before the Fed's decision.

Central bankers are widely expected to lower its key rate, now at 3.5 percent, by as much as one-half percentage point to 3 percent when policymakers wrap up on Wednesday.

Norfolk council says real estate taxes likely to increase

Real estate taxes appear nearly certain to rise again when the city adopts its budget in May. That much seemed clear after a 90-minute City Council budget discussion Tuesday.

Asked to state anonymously what they would prefer to happen to eight revenue sources, six of the eight council members said they prefer to keep the tax at the current rate, $1.11 per $100 of assessed value. Two voted to drop the rate.

No one asked for an increase, but because of rising real estate assessments, taxes would go up for most homeowners if the rate remains the same. Although the city's residential real estate prices are stagnant, assessments are based on data as much as 18 months old, when the housing market was still hot.

Last year, the council approved a 16-cent reduction, which was supposed to keep the tax bill for the average homeowner even.

Dear Panhinda and lucky.

Anyway, I was thinking of buying a bike for myself for exercise purposes. A recondition mountain bike sells between 12,000 and 20,000 depending on options.

A basic 'poor man' bicycle is around Rs 8,000. So, you must be able to fork out quite a capital to buy the poor man's vehicle.

Now, these are the types of industries that we can probably have in Sri Lanka. It would probably generate employment while at the same time lowering the prices. .

Ducktown case has similarities to north Georgia homicide

Meridith Emersons body was found on Monday in the mountains of northern Georgia. A number of similarities to other cases, including a case in Ducktown, have arisen since Gary Hilton was taken into custody and charged with her murder. n2

A bank card and bank video surveillance could be clues to tying the transient suspect to Polk County and the disappearance of a North Carolina couple. Meanwhile, a Polk County investigator believes a person who went missing in late 2006 was not a victim of homicide.

David Fountain disappeared in the Cherokee National Forest in December 2006. Officials launched an extensive search of the forest and surrounding area, but Fountain was never found though his vehicle was recovered near Thunder Rock.

During his investigation, Kevin Cole, criminal investigator for the Polk County Sheriff's Office was able to determine Fountain disappeared on his own.
