| Week 4: Copy Desks: Indispensable in Real Life, Not Thrilling on TV
Yes, thank God for Wire watchers. They've called us out a couple of times. So far, only two reporters who've been chastised for profanity? Sort of proves our point. Maybe we should get this up on Romenesko and see what comes in over the transom there. On Herc, you're forgetting that Marlo got him fired, by stealing the surveillance camera. I'm not suggesting that Herc would be motivated by selfless idealism to trap Marlo; revenge is enough to get him going. Speaking of The Untouchables, did you notice the obvious nod in Capone's direction during the final meeting between Chief Burrell and Cedric Daniels? The chief picked up his golf club and started smacking his palm with it, just to the east of Daniels' head. I don't mind this at all, nor do I mind the obvious Godfather echo in the killing of Prop Joe.
Counties begin trimming jobs, freezing hires
Pia Jordan wore a red suit and a pleasant smile as she directed a small crew from Howard County's in-house cable TV studio. But Jordan, an 18-year studio veteran, is suddenly looking for a new job. She and five other full-time staffers learned last week that they will be laid off by July. "I don't think it has hit me yet," said Jordan, who was on assignment yesterday at county election headquarters. She described herself as being "in mourning." .
Treasurers Express Concern About Risks to Investments from Climate ...
Alan Hevesi, Comptroller, New York State; and Jeb Spaulding, Treasurer, State of Vermont, all expressed concern that global warming posed long-term economic risks that threatened the value of retirement funds. They made the announcements at the CERES conference, a gathering of investors, environmentalists, analysts, and business leaders being held April 1 and 2 in New York City. Treasurer Nappier, and Comptroller Hevesi also indicated that funds they represented would likely vote their proxies in favor of shareholder resolutions filed this year against portfolio companies requesting disclosure of and plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Comptroller Thompson, as chief investment adviser to five New York City funds, indicated that he would recommend they vote their proxies in favor of the resolutions.
Radio review
The BBC and the Closet (Radio 4) was a documentary within a documentary; a slice of British social and sexual history told through the story of a radio programme that was a while in the making. In 1963, Colin Thomas, a BBC trainee, began working on a programme that would consist of gay men talking anonymously about their lives. "To edit them together, just that," explained Thomas. "[Before] it was always experts rather than gay men themselves." Two years later, the programme was finally broadcast, after many a tussle behind the scenes. Internal BBC memos made up one set of voices in the documentary, and these appeared, at the very least, ludicrous in retrospect. One high-up executive worried that "marginal cases" on hearing the subject treated sympathetically might "cross the frontier" or have their interest awakened enough "disastrously to tip the scale".
Decision Day Nears Again For Preston Development
And while the decision ultimately goes through the town's Board of Selectmen and then, most likely, to a townwide referendum vote, it has been the committee's job to weed through thousands of pages of proposals and whittle down a list that began last year with 10 developers. And the clock ticks. The town has until January 2009 to transfer title of the state-owned property to a developer or else the state reasserts control of the land and the search. Preston already spent more than a year of its three-year state-imposed timeline in its failed dealings with Utopia Studios Ltd., the developer that had proposed a theme park and entertainment complex but failed to meet deadlines in its development agreement with the town. The town voted to cut its ties with Utopia in May 2007 and start a new search.

Ledger Dad Impersonator Dupes Bullshit-Swallowing Nut Tom Cruise
A man claiming to be Heath Ledger's father Kim has been trying to scam stars. Weirdly he's been targeting Scientologists like Tom Cruise and John Travolta. (There's always been confusion between the two.) Actually, targeting Scientologists is a pretty genius plan. They clearly fall for bullshit and are quick to part with their money. Of all potential marks the man approached, it was Tom Cruise, the only man who can do anything about anything, who fell for the ruse the hardest. According to the Post, "The hoax began soon after Ledger, 28, was found dead...by the next day, a man claiming to be Kim Ledger managed to get Cruise on the phone, a source said." And guess what? Cruise believed the bullshit! Who would have thought!?! Over the next few days, he "had had a couple of conversations with" Cruise, asking for emotional support, said the source.
