Talk of the bay: As cash flows in, specialty banks line up
Chalk up another heavyweight wealth-management player coming to the Tampa Bay area to cater to the growing money elite. Bank of New York Mellon - the name created last year from the merger of Bank of New York (Alexander Hamilton's bank) and Mellon Bank (Andrew Mellon's bank) - today will announce plans to open its first area office in downtown Tampa. The office will be run by veteran wealth manager Ray Ifert, who in turn reports to Florida west coast regional director Paul Dresselhaus (a name wealthy readers may recall from the 1992 opening of the first Northern Trust office in St. Petersburg). It will be Bank of New York Mellon wealth management's 21st office statewide. Florida confidence recesses further Floridians are feeling as glum as they did in the recession of the early 1990s.
Mccain Beats Romney In Florida Gop Race
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. MIAMI (AP) - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was running third, and headed for the exits. Officials familiar with events said his aides were in discussions with McCain's advisers on a possible endorsement later in the week. ``It shows one thing. I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party,'' McCain said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. ``It's a very significant boost but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come.'' The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.
Pal: O.J. Requested Firepower
Thanks to what may have been an attempt to look tough, O.J. Simpson could find his position substantially weakened. According to a 45-page transcript of a police interview with accused armed-robbery accomplice Walter Alexander, who has opted to plead to a lesser charge and testify against the former football star, Simpson wanted to bring more than his bargaining skills to a meeting with two sports memorabilia dealers. "O.J. said, 'Hey, just bring some firearms,' " Alexander told Las Vegas authorities, per the Associated Press. "He said…'We won't have to use 'em, but…just to look tough, you know, so that these people know that, you know, we're here for business.' " Simpson, Alexander and four other men were charged last month with 10 felony counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, assault, burglary and conspiracy for allegedly stealing $80,000 worth of memorabilia from two collectors at the Palace Station Hotel & Casino Sept.
